Export your part as an STL, upload it, and you get a price immediately. Most single project parts cost ₹400–₹2,500: ₹4 per gram of plastic plus ₹1.5 per minute of machine time, then 18% GST and shipping.

Two rules save students the most money and the most marks: drop infill to 15% for anything not carrying load, and order at least two weeks before submission so there is room for one revision.

Why order instead of using the college lab?

Most Indian colleges now have a printer somewhere in the innovation cell or the mechanical department. When it is free and available, use it. It usually is not both. The predictable problems are a queue that gets long exactly at project season, a machine whose calibration has drifted, a lab technician available in a two-hour window, and no help at all when the print fails at 80%.

A service is worth paying for when the deadline is fixed: you get a known price before you commit, a known date, and a reprint if the part comes out wrong. That last point matters more than the cost difference — a failed print three days before submission is a much more expensive problem than ₹800.

A printed part is not a metal part. FDM prints split along layer lines under sustained stress, so do not use them where failure injures someone or wrecks equipment. For a demonstrator, a prototype, or a jig, they are ideal.

What does a project part cost?

Two numbers set the price: grams of plastic and minutes of machine time. Real examples at our rates of ₹4/g and ₹1.5/min:

Seven ways to cut the cost in half

Students overpay for the same avoidable reasons. In rough order of impact:

Drop the infill. Anything that is not carrying load prints fine at 15%. Solid or 50% infill on a display part can double the price for zero benefit.

Hollow the solid volumes. CAD exports are often solid by default. Shell a mock-up to a 2 mm wall and the weight collapses while it looks identical.

Scale down if the size is not fixed. Price scales with volume, so a 20% reduction removes roughly half the material. For a demonstrator, nobody is measuring.

Split parts so they print flat. A tall part needs supports, which are material you pay for and then throw away. Two flat halves that bolt together are usually cheaper and stronger.

Prototype rough, finish fine. Print the fit-check version at draft layer height to confirm the dimensions, then spend the money on the final one.

Design for the process. Keep walls above ~1.2 mm, keep overhangs under 45°, and leave 0.3–0.5 mm clearance on parts that must slide or fit together — see the design guidelines. Parts that need no supports cost less.

Order the group's parts together. One shipment for four teammates beats four shipments, and repeats of the same part are cheaper per unit.

PLA or PETG for a project part?

PLA if it is judged by eye, PETG if it is judged by function. PLA holds sharper detail and gives cleaner flat surfaces, which suits architecture models, anatomical models, and form prototypes. It also softens around 60 °C, so a part sitting next to a motor driver or in a car boot will droop.

PETG is tougher, bends before it snaps, and holds up to about 80 °C — the right pick for motor mounts, drone arms, brackets, and any enclosure that gets warm. Both are ₹4/g here, so the choice is purely technical. The full comparison is on the materials page.

Plan backwards from your submission date

Two weeks of clearance is the right target. The reason is not the printing — it is the revision you have not planned for yet. First prints reveal a hole that is 0.4 mm too tight or a mount that fouls a wire, and you want time to fix that once.

  • The quantity, if it is more than one.

An STL exported from your CAD tool — Fusion 360, SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, Onshape, Tinkercad, and FreeCAD all export STL directly. Export at a fine resolution, keep the model in millimetres, and make sure it is a single closed solid rather than loose surfaces.
